Tasty Calamari or perfect baits, squid fishing is fun, messy and a staple to the spring run in New England.  Anglers flock to bridges, docks and take night trips in the boat to target Loligo squid.   While they can be found inshore, Offshore anglers often target Illex squid as well.  Both species are targeted using the same size and style of squid jigs.   Japanese squid jigs such as Yamashita, Yo Zuri and Shimano may be more pricey than other offerings but on nights when the squid are discriminating you will notice the difference.   Tying a squid leader can be done several ways but almost always includes some light Fluorocarbon and one, two or three, branches.   Pro tip:  Squid often hide on the edge of the light so don’t be afraid to fish just outside your light!
